S Belser Essays - Libertarian Theory, John Locke, Empiricists
S Belser Human Nature and Self Government Thomas Hobbes and John Locke developed theories on human nature and how men govern themselves. Despite their differences, Hobbes and Locke, both became two of the most influential political theorists in the world. Their ideas and philosophies spread all over the world, influencing the creation of many new governments. These philosophers both recognize that people develop a social contract within their society, but have differing views on what exactly the social contract is and how it is established. Hobbes and Locke each developed differing versions of the social contract, but both agreed that certain freedoms had been surrendered for societys protection and that the government has definite responsibilities to its citizens. Both philosophers agree that before men came to govern themselves, they all existed in a state of nature. The state of nature is the condition men were in before political government came into existence, and what society would be if there was no government. Hobbes and Locke created a revolutionary idea of the state of nature. They did not believe government should be organized through the Church therefore abandoned the idea of divine right, where power of the King came directly from G-d. Starting from a clean slate, with no organized church, they needed a construct on which to build society. The foundation of society began with the original state of nature. Hobbess perception of the original state of nature is what would exist if there were no common power to execute and enforce the laws to restrain individuals. In this case, the laws of the jungle would prevail where only the strongest survive. Hobbes felt that everyone should live in peace, but you should protect yourself by all means necessary. Resources are scarce and humankind is naturally competitive. This inevitably created jealousy and hatred, eventually leading to war. This constant state of war is what Hobbes believes to be mans original state of nature. According to Hobbes, man cannot be trusted in the state of nature. Limits must be put on freedom and inalienable rights, when there is an excess of freedom and power it is easily and often abused. Hobbes lived in the 17th century, and wrote during the time of the English Civil War. I believe that his political views could have been influenced by the war. Hobbes perceived that by bringing back the monarch; there would be an end to the civil war. On the other hand, John Locke believes the original state of nature is a state of perfect freedom where men do whatever it is in their will and ability to accomplish. Every man has the liberty to arrange his life in the manner he chooses, however no man has the liberty to kill himself. Unlike Hobbes nature of constant war, Lockes state of nature is peaceful, based on the fact that men do not want to risk their lives by constantly fighting. All men desire the right to live and respect that everyone is after the same thing. Man, according to Locke, is governed by reason in the state of nature. Locke was influenced by the revolutionary upheaval in a different way than Hobbes. The war caused Locke to dislike violence and extremes. Stability was the central assumption of his thinking. Hobbes reasoning was derived from the assumption that man was naturally vicious or wicked, while Lockes era was more optimistic about mans nature and reasoning. Preservation of mankind is the law of nature established by Hobbes and Locke. In order to abide by this law, man enters into an agreement, forming the social contract. The social contract is a theory that views the foundation of morality being founded solely on uniform social agreements that serve the best interests of those who make the agreement. It is an agreement by which men are said to have abandoned the state of nature in order to form the society in which they now live. Hobbes believes that people surrender their natural rights and submit to the absolute authority of a sovereign, who attained power through the collective submission of the people. Even though the power of the sovereign is accumulated from the people, the sovereign has absolute power. Locke, however argued that agreement to

Can money buy you happiness
Can money buy you happiness Can money buy you happiness? Can money buy you happiness?Do you feel happy? What does make you feel happy? What are the keys for being happy? Well, people all over the world try to provide themselves and their families with happy life. But each person sees happiness in different aspects. Some may feel happy for getting a highly paid job, some are happy because they have overcome a hard illness and others are happy to have a place to live in. If we ask people from different societies about happiness, so we will be surprised to know about so varied answers. If we speak about those people who live in poverty; letââ¬â¢s take African tribes or Indian people in slums ââ¬â what is happiness for them? They live in bad conditions, but they have very big families; there are many children who should be provided with food and attention. But in these places, parents cannot send the kids to school; so boys and girls do not get any education. Instead of it, children go to the street in order to save money for the whole family. Can you imagine? But in spite of it, people do feel happy. What make them feel so? If taking into consideration a European person or an American one, they wouldnââ¬â¢t ever survive in such conditions, as they are used to have a luxurious house and the ability to travel all around the world. So is money the key of happiness for them? You may see two different worlds: the one, where money doesnââ¬â¢t have any matter and the second one, where people cannot live without having enough hard cash. So what people from these worlds can feel happy? Telling the truth, no European could get used to a poor society after living in prosperity; and no Indian would know what to do with money. But these poor people who live in big families in humble houses know what happiness is better, than the others. What is the reason for that? Well, it is quite simple. They just see this world from other point of view. They do not corrupt yet, they are not spoiled. They are real; they are honest an d fair. But someone would say: how do they live? How do they provide the family with all necessary things? Well, of course, they do not have an opportunity to buy brand clothes, to fly to another countries or to eat everyday outside. But exactly because poor people donââ¬â¢t spend money on entertainments, they have much love and respect towards each other. Their heart is full of real emotions; they do care about the children, as parents spend a lot of time with them. Instead, rich people usually hire a baby sitter who becomes the parent, friend and teacher of the child. The world of the kid is surrounded around the baby sitter ââ¬â and thatââ¬â¢s it. Yes, maybe, he will have a possibility to watch cartoon all day, but he will be alone. Will it make him happy? The main problem of people of Earth is feeling loneliness. There are many cases when parents who need to spend much time at work, forget about the kids. They try to work hard in order to earn money, but soon they do n ot have any other activity to do except the job. But at this time the child is dreaming about having a friendly and tight family; to have parents who will spend with him the weekends playing football or watching him riding the bike. Such dreams of kids sound silly for adults, but this is the truth. In our modern society the children are lack of attention. So how do parents compensate it? The common thing is to buy something: a lollypop or a toy; sometimes, they just give money and say: here you are, go and buy something. The child will accept the gift, but will it really offset him the love of his mom and dad? From another point of view, poor children dream about having those toys, as they do not have any opportunity to play with such one. The kids are sure that this piece of plastic is the key for joy. We can understand them, as they have never seen something of the kind: it is colorful, bright and it can move or talk ââ¬â incredible! But how these kids spend their free time? T hey do not watch the TV, they do not go to restaurants. They have a ball or a bicycle ââ¬â they take them and go outside; call for some friends and can invent all sorts of games with the two subjects. But all of you should agree that living in the 21th century without big income is a problem. Many couples divorce because they cannot earn for living. According the last research of scientists people really feel happier with money. Nowadays this index shows us how much the person is satisfied with his life. It sounds pity. But just think over it: what can be bought or where is it possible to go for free? Even for staying in parks you have to pay. Imagine the situation when you have to buy a gift for your friendââ¬â¢s or childââ¬â¢s birthday. The kid has a dream to get a guitar; but you donââ¬â¢t have money to buy it. In this case both of you will be upset and you even will be irritated, asking yourself: why donââ¬â¢t I have enough money? Why my salary is so poor that I cannot buy even a present for my childââ¬â¢s birthday? It is a sad situation. Or you want to spend your holiday in some beautiful place in nature; you have to spend money on accommodation, meals and transport. After you have counted all costs, many of you will be surprised, as the number will be very high. Do you agree? So, the question of money can affect on the happiness of a person, unfortunately. But still we have to try not to make this problem the one which will destroy our relations with other people.

Free Essays on Racism In Huckleberry Finn
Racism in Huckleberry Finn In Huckleberry Finn and throughout his works, Mark Twain explores the culture of racism. In todayââ¬â¢s society the ideals of racism have greatly evolved. Slavery is now abolished and even a word like ââ¬Å"niggerâ⬠is now considered vulgar. During the era of Huck and Tom, most of the children considered slavery to be normal and the use of the word ââ¬Å"niggerâ⬠was not uncommon or even though of as inappropriate. ââ¬Å"Huckleberry Finn was written during the reconstruction after the civil war, and a year after the passing of the Civil Rights Act which assured equality of treatment for whites and blacksâ⬠(Beaver 37). Hostile critics stirred up the possibility that Huckleberry Finn could in fact corrupt morals, upright citizens then banned it from libraries and school rooms. Many modern critics in contrast to those of the early 20th century, praise the novel for its brilliance and new way of expression. ââ¬Å"Huckleberry Finn is the closest thing we have to an national epicâ⬠(Faidman 362). ââ¬Å"Twain, at least in Huckleberry Finn, reveals himself to be one of those writers of whom there are a great many in any literature who have discovered a new way of writing, valid not only for themselves, but for others. I should place him, in the respect, even with Dryden and Swift, as one of those rare writers who have brought their language up to date and in doing so, ââ¬Å"purified the dialect of the tribe.â⬠In this respect, I should place him above Hawthorneâ⬠(Blair 6). ââ¬Å"Huckleberry Finn is our Chaucer, our Homer, our Dante, our Virgil. It is the source of the stream, the seed-bed, the book which, read or unread, has influenced a thousand American writersâ⬠(Faidman 362). Overall, the most important thing to understand is that Mark Twain is illustrating his valuable ideas without pushing them upon the reader directly. Wall Mart stores Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Wall Mart stores - Essay Example As I witnessed, the performance excellence becomes highly achieved by the firm. Wal-Mart has continued to colonize the global market through its relentless expansion (Edward, 2006). Wall mart has over the years opened new megastores nearly every two business days, and it has at the same time continued to expand on average into a new nation every year (Bonacich, 2004). Being a true global company, Wall Mart has redefined and changed the shopping experience for each and every American customer.I managed to see the employees of the firm work. They give the necessary human resources that move the engine of production of goods and marketing of the produced goods (Chazen, 2002). They work tirelessly to ensure that customers get served well. Without them, the company is unlikely to function even if there exists customers and shareholders ready to purchase the goods offered by the company. Employees of Wall Mart are valuable since they are the ones selling and marketing the products to consu mers (Bonaich, 2004). They take all the necessary procedures to make sure that they perform over the set limits. Suppliers of the goods and services are vital as they provide the goods which the company depends on to produce or sell its outputs (Chazen, 2002). Without them, marketing and production become rendered null and void. I saw how the organization relates with the community in their activities. Society impacts the organization in a big way (Ruta, 2009). Even though, they gain economically.... Society impacts the organization in a big way (Ruta, 2009). Even though, they gain economically from the company, they require protection from unethical, unjust, illegal and irresponsible acts by the company (Feser, 2011). Through the use of pressure groups, protests, and also the legal system, the community regulates the companyââ¬â¢s behavior. The company is working extra hard to ensure a positive impact to the society. In my tour of the organization, I noticed that the organizat ion has a unique, competitive environment. Although the companyââ¬â¢s main competition comes from local merchandise retailers, a number of warehouse clubs and also, supermarket retailers (Bonaich, 2004). The companyââ¬â¢s retailing industry is immense in size and is always experiencing a number of growths and changes (Chazen, 2002). The main competitors compete both in the national and international market. There is massive competition on the pricing, layout, location, store size, environment and also technology and innovation (Griffin, 2010). Nevertheless, the firm is performing beyond expectations. The Regional Transportation District in Denver Essay - 1
The Regional Transportation District in Denver - Essay Example Through research and analysis, it has been shown that the project is feasible and the only thing needed to be done is the making of a dream into reality. Probably, the strength seen in this proposal is the consideration of its weaknesses so that preparations could be made for a positive response to problems that may arise. Foreseeing what could happen in the administration of the project makes one be prepared to face not only those which are expected but to anticipate things that have never been brought to mind during the course of planning. It is true that there could be other problems to be met in the future in the process of realizing the dream of a quality-based parking space and one could not know what to prepare for in such case but having an attitude of preparedness can evade unsolved problems. As all ideas have their strengths and weaknesses, it is also true in this thought of making a parking space to solve the current problems in Denver RTD. Not disregarding the weaknesses but considering them to make the plan even better, the team who will be working on this is encouraged to unite in the realization of a traffic free and parking space problem free community without even going against the law nor putting the burden on the citizenry. This author believes that everyone would love to live in a world where there is less stress in the streets and in the workplace and this proposal is not just a solution to the most evident problem on the parking spaces but also extends help to make our days go well in school and at work. It is then concluded that the proposition is not only feasible but also very helpful in the society, affecting many aspects of our lives, making the expenses and trouble we will all go through in realizing our desire. It is then my desire to encourage the actions of those who are in the position to approve review all the information presented in this paper and with the same passion as this author has, may you all become one in mind to exte nd the best that you can to have a Denver that can take pride in its Regional Transportation District.

Hyatt Regency Hotel Walkaway Collapse Assignment
Hyatt Regency Hotel Walkaway Collapse - Assignment Example When the walkaways reached the floor, they killed 114 people (Lewis, James, Ralston, Norb& Wheatly 2). The accident left 200 people injured (Banset & Parsons 273). The disaster is related to engineering disasters because of a flaw in the connection of the walkways and the support rods. The disaster led to a number of significant changes in engineering practice. For instance, the engineer who authorized its design lost his license. After restoration, the hotel is currently functioning normally. The Hyatt Regency collapse occurred on July 17, 1981 in Missouri (Banset & Parsons 273). The hotel is located in Kansas City. The accident led to the death of 114 people and caused the injuries of 200 others (Banset & Parsons 273). The disaster has been selected for this paper because it was the most tragic structural collapse in American history at that time. During that fateful night, many people had gathered in the atrium to attend the highly publicized tea party. A significant number of peo ple stood on the walkways. When the accident occurred, all the walkways were packed with many patrons. The design of the walkaways contributed to the extent of the disaster. The fourth-floor bridge was suspended over all the subsequent bridges. In addition, the third walkaway was set off a few meters from the other two. Investigations established a flawed design alteration that increased the load on the connection between the support beams of the fourth walk away and the tie rods that were used to carry the weight of the next walk away. The engineers had clearly failed to observe due diligence. For example, the new design could not handle the weight of the structure. In addition, it could not support the weight of the hundreds of spectators that were standing on it. Consequently, the bridge failed and both walkaways ended up crashing into the lobby. The accident led to the death and injury of many people.
