I was at a volleyball tournament in Chicago. We had just lost the championship game and all my teammates were clearly upset. My coach emerged from the locker room; her eyes were swollen and red from crying. Suddenly, every phone began vibrating, ringing, and lighting up. Confused, I read the thirty-two text messages I had received in the span of ten minutes. Every single one contained the same message, Karen was gone; she had committed suicide. From that day forward the word suicide has never held the same context. Rather than teenage suicide being some controversy discussed in the news, it became a painful reality. He was admitted into a Cincinnati hospital with alcohol poisoning. Simply put, the use of depressants to relieve depression is a terrible idea that can have tragic consequences. Constant substance abuse intensifies emotions and blurs the line between going through a rough patch and an impulsive act that can never be reversed. Suicide. To mention that word to someone who is depressed would be planting the idea in their head. To discuss the complexities of human emotions behind suicide is unthinkable. Society regards suicide as a taboo word; but it essential that this attitude evolve to prevent the deaths of thousands of college aged students across the country. Conversely, think of the number of times you have heard someone say, â€Å"Wow, if I get more homework I’m going to kill myself.† I have heard that expression on a daily basis. These generalized and popular sayings underestimate suicide and establish the fact that parents and their teenagers do not believe suicide will affect their community; shown by a study performed by the University of Massachusetts Memorial Children’s Medical.
